A denture or partial denture are two of the many options to consider when a patient has a loss of numerous teeth in an arch. The difference between a denture and partial denture is the amount of existing teeth. A denture requires the loss of all teeth in an arch and a partial denture is the loss of several teeth in an arch. The dentist at Las Positas Family Dental will be able to discuss the best options according to patient needs.
There are two types of dentures: conventional or immediate. A conventional denture is made after all teeth are extracted from an arch and the tissues have healed. The conventional denture is then placed and fit to ensure the look and functionality is adequate. An immediate denture is placed directly after teeth are extracted, therefore a patient would not leave the office without their new set of teeth. With an immediate denture, gum tissue will heal and shrink under the prosthodontic, thus having the patient return to make any needed adjustments to the appliance.
Dentures are durable appliances that enhance a patient’s smile and gives them the ability to function as if they had all of their natural teeth. Dentures last many years but may need to be repaired in the future due to normal wear.
